INSTRUCTION

06/01/2020 (Week 1) : Lecture 1

Today, lecturers introduced the module outline and also the first project. Students required to form a group with 4/5 peoples, each group could not have more than 2 peoples from the same course intake. I was forming a group with Zi Yi, Chan Hee, Dom and Winshen.

Mr Charles started the first lecture about the intercultural design. Our first project general theme was "Mythology". We had to prepare a preliminary proposal to conduct a research about the mythology of the place we were going to visit --- Japan. We needed to investigate the infusion of mythological influences in current/contemporary design through sociological and cultural perspectives. My teammates started to do a research about the Japan Mythologies to prepare our proposal.

Japan Mythology Proposal
  • 200 words write-up about the theme with Japan culture (with citation)
  • A minimum of 5 preliminary ideas with rationale.
  • Visual reference
  • Reference List
  • Pictures Credits
  • PDF digital submission in TIMeS

09/01/2020 (Week 1) : Proposal 1 / version 1

My group did the research of the Japan Mythology based on several aspect like building, movie, creatures, nature and so on. We compiled the research into the google slide to create a rough proposal.

NOTES: During the consultation with Ms Anis, Mr Charles and Mr Asrizal, they said that our proposal had included a massive mythology but they were not connected to the nowadays design of Japan in the sociological and cultural perspective, they were just a collection of myth and design philosophy. Ms Anis gave an example of the Myth of Koi Fish. The Koi Fish kept swimming upstream to become a dragon. The value behind the myth was brave and determination. This mythology had slowly developed become one the Japan Boy`s Festival, and how the myth had become prominent which would bring an influence to the modern design in both visible and invisible way. We needed to prepare a new proposal with the deep down research method on 3 myths.

13/01/2020 (Week 2) : Lecture 2

Today, Dr Jinchi delivered the lecture 2 regarding some stories about the relationships of the myth and cultural jokes and traditions. There are two major types of culture, the first is the external culture which we can see and observe easily which is merely the 10% of the whole culture we know; the second is the internal culture which has covered the total 90% of the whole culture which is hard to observe. Culture refers to the cumulative acquired by a group of people, a way of life without thinking about them, and a symbolic communication.

Layers of Cultures:
  • Generation level: associated with different generation.
  • Social level: associated with education & occupation.
  • Corporate level: associated with the particular culture of an organisation.

16/01/2020 (Week 2) : Proposal 1 / version 2

For this week, we had prepare the new research of the 6 Japan Mythology rather than just 3 as it will provide us more options and flexibility for our proposal 1. We did some research based on basic aspect like building, interior, movie, fashion, food and so on. We compiled the research to create a second proposal for consultation.

The Myths included:
  • Koi
  • Torii
  • Wabi-sabi
  • Jizo
  • Crane
  • Hinamatsuri

NOTES: After the consultation with Mr Asrizal, we needed to narrow down our mythologies options to 3 with deep research on them. Our lecturer pointed that we need to think about the intangible influence of the myth that would affect the society indirectly. He gave a example of the Koi fish, we needed to think about what were the other forms that would represent/translate the determine spirit of Koi rather than just in a form of a fish. At least 5 aspects of influence needed to be included in our slides with data collection methods and research venues. Good problem statement and questions were important as it would guide us through the whole research of Japan Trip.

20/01/2020 (Week 3) : Lecturer 3
There was no lecture today as there would be 2 groups of students delivered their presentation.
After the presentation session, Mr Azrizal inform us the important information for the Japan Trip.

23/01/2020 (Week 3) : Proposal 1 / final version

Today our lecturers invited producer Mr Amer to share us some useful information and knowledge for travel video. We were advised to enjoy the trip without burden. Just record anything without hesitation and regret.

2 Types of Travel video:
(both can be fun & boring)
  • Travel Documentary: 100% truth with proven facts.
  • Travel Vlog: Fact is not necessary.

3 Main stages & effort needed to plan a video:
  • Pre-production 50%
  • Prooduction 20%
  • Post production 30%

Camera Movement Guide:
  • Dolly in/out
  • Boom/Jib
  • Truck/Slide
  • Pan
  • Tilt
  • Roll

File Management:
  • Raw: original footage
  • Audio: Voice memo
  • Project file: AE, PR...
  • Graphic: Photos
  • Other:Passport, hotel address, tickets...
  • Render Files: final 1, final 2...

NOTES: Today is the day we had to present our finalized proposal 1. Ms.Anis and Mr.Asrizal said that we had done a good job for the presenation. The next thing we need to do was to do more research on the possible venue that could allow us to conduct a good research.
