Feedback from Dr Hayati: 1) There was no class due to the Hari Raya holiday. A
recorded lecture video with lecture slides was attached to Microsoft Team
for student’s revision purposes. 2) Students are required to create
an ebook with the pdf when submitting their 2nd Assignment (the complete
publication design). 3) Students do not need to purchase the
software. In the online FlipHTML5, the page limit of FlipHTML5 is no more
than 500 pages while the size of which is no more than 150 Mb. If the
design pdf work is massive, students should compress the pdf file in the
link provided below to convert the pdf into an ebook.
Reflection: When it comes to countless design ideas on Pinterest, I had no
idea which design suit the research topic of "Visual Aesthetics" well.
If the ideal state for visual aesthetics does not solely mean for
"beautiful", hence, I should not opt for the visual design that
only fit my personal preference, as the design has to fits its purpose
to serve the topic.
(W8) 08/04/21: Independent Learning Week (ILW)
No Class.
(W9) 15/04/21: Booklet Design (stage 1)
This week, I started to create the first draft of the booklet design in
Adobe Illustrator and play with the design elements that I had collected
in the last two weeks. The design was developed according to the visual
reference to ensure the design was meeting the concept requirements.
Design principles were applied as well to create a visual satisfying
publication layout design that met its design purpose and functionality.
The draft dissertation was used as reference content while creating the
content layout design although it was not considered a completed
dissertation writing. However, in order to ensure that there were no
huge changes to the content that may affect the layout design in the
publication, some adjustments had been done to the content of the draft
dissertation.

Feedback from Dr Hayati: 1) Students should do their very best in completing the
weekly task to avoid any delay of the tasks that will end up with the
overwhelming accumulation of workload. 2) On the other hand,
students are free to explore the publication design with their knowledge
gained in the previous typography classes regarding the content layout
design. 3) Students could refer to the booklet design examples
given by Dr Hayati during the online class but it's not necessary to
follow exactly as the design style was a subjective factor that varies
from different individuals. 4) Students could search for a better
design for the table content instead of having the table content created
in Google Docs embedded in the final publication design.
(W10) 22/04/21: Booklet Design (stage 2)
This week, I double-checked on the dissertation to finalise any possible
mistakes and errors in the research paper. The design was developed
according to the visual reference to ensure the design was meeting the
concept requirements. Design principles were applied as well to create a
visual satisfying publication layout design that met its design purpose and
functionality. After getting some feedback from the lecturer, I had created
a new design for the book cover as well as adding more variation in the
content layout design.
Feedback from Dr Hayati: 1) Students should write the dissertation as if they don't
know anything. Students should describe everything in a clear manner as a
dissertation is descriptive scholarly writing. 2) The submission
deadline would not be postponed although the learning duration had been
postponed to week 15. 3) Pay attention to the integrity of the
layout, typeface design and so on. Students need to have a customized
cover page design to ensure it’s recognizable. 4) Remember to
credit the design if any artist design was being used directly with
adjustment. 5) The lecturer recommended trying out more variety of
design layout to avoid too many repetitive design elements which are not
that interesting to read on.
(W11) 29/04/21: Booklet Design (stage 3)After accomplishing the draft booklet design, I decided to
adjust the overall layout design again after realising a better way to pull
out the design that suits the research topic well. The design adjustment
includes the background gradient adjustment, text resizing, paragraph
arrangement and so on. Other than adjusting the booklet layout design, a new
design was created for the data chart to ensure the data chart design was
coherent with the booklet design theme.
Feedback from Dr Hayati: 1) About the booklet design, the lecturer mentioned that she
would not be too picky on the booklet design but it's all depending upon my
satisfaction with the booklet design.
2) For the draft dissertation,
the lecturer pointed out several constructive feedback upon the wrong and
correction needed to be done before the final submission.
3) There
were some minor grammatical issues in the sentence. Some sentences were too
long to read and needed to be broken down into two sentences. There was not
much issue with the punctuation, but there were some misused
words.
4) The conceptual framework needed to focus on the
topic of aesthetics, the keywords on the framework had to be within the
topic discussion.
5) Besides, the lecturer said I need to
focus on correcting the writing in section 4 research findings. All of the
tables, screenshot images need to be labelled well. At the same time, I need
to include the figure and table list after the content page as
well.
6) Lastly, in section 7 the writing content tends to
be further research instead of project recommendation, I need to focus on
describing how to apply the research result into an actual experience.
(W13) 06/05/21: Booklet Design (stage 5)
This week, I updated the final booklet design in google drive
with the lecturer with revised content. Furthermore, the exported booklet
design from AI was uploaded to the online flipping book generator to
create a virtual booklet for submission. On top of that, I had to put
aside the editing of the draft dissertation as the feedback of the file
had not yet been received from the lecturer. Hence, I was advised by the
lecturer to start project 3 journal article writing this week. The first
draft of the journal publication was done and ready to get consultation
for next week.

Fig 6.1 Flipbook Preview (ver.2)
Feedback from Dr Hayati: 1) Since my pdf feedback has not yet been shared by the
lecturer, I’m told to start the first draft of the journal article writing
referring to the example given in the Google classroom. 2) The
recommendation is given to give the article a title name as “An Overview
of Visual Aesthetics in Animation Storytelling.” which aims to narrow down
the topic of discussion. 3) Furthermore, I need to extract the key
content from each of the sections and restructure them into the article
writing with segregation. To ensure the table or diagram is related to the
concise article content, I may need to create a new diagram. 4) The
problem statement from the draft dissertation needs some amendment as well
before transferring it to the article writing. 5) Students should
not put too much time into the booklet design starting from this week as
the students require to put more effort focusing on the complete
dissertation writings as well as the journal article writing.
(W16) 15/07/21: Final Dissertation & Booklet Design
After I finally got the pdf feedback file from the lecturer,
on week 15, I straight away to do the last amendment on the draft
dissertation writing. The good news was since I had done most of the key
amendments a couple of weeks ago based on the verbal feedback given by the
lecturer, hence the rest of the amendments I needed to make was not as
overwhelming as I expected. The major thing I needed to do was rectify
some linguistic errors and create a table for the email interview section.
The final dissertation paper was then turned in for the plagiarism check
system in TiMES and thankfully the index similarity was below 15%.

Reflection: I would not deny that this is the most demanding project comparing with the other modules. Although some of my classmates mentioned assumed that Research Methodology was more demanding than dissertation writing, however, I found that dissertation writing actually took me more time to accomplish as compared with methodology design. Critical writing skill really takes time to practise and it even more challenging as writing is not my main strength.
