Research Implementation

01/06/2020 (Week 8):
According to the lecture, students were tasked to prepare for the first draft of research implementation with minimal 2 research method proposed. The research method could be the mix and match of qualitative and quantitative research methods to get the primary data resource. Below was my first draft of the research implementation with qualitative email interview and quantitative google questionnaire with visual observation.

Research Implementation First Version:

FEEDBACK: Ms Hayati mentioned that the progress of the research implementation first draft was seemed to be working in the right way. I needed to identify more credentials from the targeted audience for qualitative research to ensure that I could get a sufficient amount of participants.

08/06/2020 (Week 9): No Class
There was no class for today, but students needed to make use of their time to continue working on the research method. Below was the second version of the draft with several modifications done according to the feedback given by Dr Hayati. For the animation trailers for the comparison observation, I was struggling to choose between the first group: <Alien VS Monster> & <Hotel Transylvania> and the second group: <Ugly Dolls> & <The Emoji Movie> as both of the groups had a very interesting visual aesthetic to study.

First group: <Alien VS Monster> & <Hotel Transylvania>
The animation trailer revolved around the story concept of the unwelcomed monster.

Second group: <Ugly Dolls> & <The Emoji Movie>
The animation trailer was about the story concept of the character was born to be malfunction.

Research Implementation Second Version:

FEEDBACK:
  • Ms Hayati mentioned that the first draft of the research implementation was nicely done as there were comprehensive investigation and all-rounded consideration on the research approaches provided.
  • She also mentioned that the visual observation question included in the questionnaire was considered as a quantitative research method but not completely the visual observation research.
  • I was suggested to prepare another visual observation research approach on the topic of visual aesthetics for the chosen animation trailers. The research outcome could be compared with the audience's feedback in the quantitative google survey as well to observe the difference.
  • Besides, for the google survey, I should name each of the sections properly and to someone to test out the survey to estimate the time needed to complete the survey.
  • The consideration for the Chinese version of the online survey should be well translated with minimal grammar and linguistic mistake according to the English version of the online survey.
  • I should search for more credential of the animation studio director or producer for the email interview as they will have a clearer overview to answer my research questions.

15/06/2020 (Week 10):
Below was the third version of the draft with modifications done according to the feedback given by Dr Hayati on week 9. On the other hand, I invited one of my family members to test out the quantitative google survey. After the first test, several problems were spotted on the google form.

The Problems in the Google Form:
  • Problem: the same questions seemed to be repeated for many times which resulted in a boring survey form. Solution: restructure the questions with different words or sentence structure without changing the original meanings. The suitable amount of emoji was applied to increase the visual fun as well as to match the research topic of visual aesthetics as well.
  • Problem: the structured question that only allows picking one choice was not flexible enough. the suggestion was given to change the question structure to allow multiple choice at the same time. Solution: I remained the structured question that only allows picking one choice to avoid the audience simply pick all of the answers without any consideration, but the "others" selection was provided to allow the participant to give free form answers as they wish.
  • Problem: the participant involved with the mandarin background may not able to have a full understanding of the language of English will tend to provide unreliable answers. Solution: the google form will be translated into Chinese version according to the format of English google form.
I did have the consideration to prepare the Chinese version of the survey form at the early stage. However, it seemed to take a lot of works to create another using different platform as I need to find out the suitable platform and translate the question into precise Chinese language. At the end of the day for research conclusion, I needed to translate the feedback answers again. After the consideration, I decided to create a bilingual questionnaire rather than just create a pure English or Chinese google form version.

Research Implementation Final Draft:

Quantitative Google Questionnaire:

Qualitative Email Interview Questions:

Email Interview Request.

Quantitative Google Survey Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/
Qualitative Email Interview Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/

FEEDBACK:
  • Ms Hayati mentioned that students were encouraged to search for more platform like the discussion forum on the online platform so that students could reach more participants to join the questionnaire survey. The discussion forum should be related to the topic of animation.
  • She also mentioned that students should try their best to get at least 1 or 2 directors or producers to answer the qualitative email interview questions in the google form. If students could get the participants of certain experts in the animation industry, Lecturer will provide us with some possible expert credential so that students could try to send their email interview invitation later on.

22/06/2020 (Week 11):
After a couple of weeks, students were tasked to collect all of the information with proper analysis and compile it into a sequence slides with sufficient evidence provided. Furthermore, students could leave Google form open to the public to allow continuously receiving responses from the participants. Below was the data compilation slides with analysis result well arranged in the proper sequence.
