FINAL PROJECT: Stop Motion Video

Three Favorite Stop-Motion Video

The reason I love this stop motion animation was definitely because of the immersive paper texture effect that works well together with the story. The paper making effect had successfully restored the purest pleasure of paper folding in our childhood memories, hence it was the best material to be used to reflect the purest innocent characteristic of the little prince.

This is the stop motion video created by a Japanese in a funny yet humorous approach to depict the emotion of anger and the jokes in real life. I like the way how the creator is using unexpected materials to create the most iconic Japanese food --- sushi. The sound effect sounds lovely yet comfortable for me.

Stop Motion Video 3: https://youtu.be/Pingu As A Chef

This my favourite stop motion short movies when I was little! The penguin created by using the clay material had portrayed an interesting and wonderful homely characteristic which was full of charisma for kids. There was no clear language dialogue among the characters, the communication was replaced the unknown sounds but yet the audience could still understand the emotion and message delivered. The most impressive was the classic adorable calling sound "Nood Nooooood!!!" by the Penguin --- Pingu. The environment settings were simple but the warm plot was the key point of the whole video.

Proposal Version 1
After having a lecture about the 3 act structure writing, students need to start working on the scriptwriting for the stop-motion video. Below was the first draft of the Ideation and 3 act structures.

Proposal (Version 1)

FEEDBACK: Mr Martin pointed out the star counting is a romantic and beautiful job, it should be the ending. Act 1 should introduce him stuck in boring predicted repeated daily life, a job with calculator and documents or something and it may end up with the increase of workload or calculator burns and he is worn out. I needed to figure out the act 2.

Proposal Version 2
Changes had been made upon the  3 act structure writing according to the advice given by Mr Martin. I remained the same ideal job of counting stars for the main character as I wanted to depict the illusion created by this pyramid society which was beautiful but deadly at the same moment. Same as the hidden inner thought under the smile that cries out for help in silence.

Proposal (Version 2)

FEEDBACK: Mr Martin recommendation: 10 seconds for Act 1; 15 seconds for Act 2; 5 seconds for Act 3. (idea/plot reference for act 2: https://youtu.be/e9dZQelULDk)

Plot Segmentation
Students should make the story plot simpler by avoiding an over-complicated storyline to realise an ideal PSA video about 30 seconds. I had a rethink about the plot segmentation to make the story shorter and simpler.  Below was the first draft for the latest plot segmentation with the shot size and duration listed. Storyboard with the drawing will be updated soon.

Storyboard & Animatics (Version 1)
For this week student needed to start their storyboard drawing with shot list stated clearly as well as to create an animatic with audio/sound effect included. Below was the latest google slide with modified shot lists, storyboard and animatics. To visualise the concept of the character as well as the environment, several animation films were chosen as the reference.

FEEDBACK: Mr Martin and Mr Razif pointed out that the idea of the story was good but the time provided for the video was too short to establish the whole story idea in a comprehensive manner. Mr Martin suggested to focus more on the adult working scene without the baby scene, but I mentioned that the baby scene was the crucial scene to establish the concept of Skinner Box and the cycling of the same issue without early conscious. Hence, the opinion was given to simplifying the storyboard by either remove the baby scene just focus on the adult stage or just turn the adult character into the baby identity, or I could find out the other possibilities to overcome the challenge. Otherwise, the workload would be very overwhelming which was not fair for me, Mr Martin said. For the audio aspect, Mr Razif commented there was not much issue with it, I should maintain the volume consistency to avoid audio clipping. The overall sound effect was good to go.

Storyboard & Animatics (Version 2)
Below was the latest storyboard with modification according to the feedback given by lecturers. Some scene had changed and added some extra scene to establish the issue of overwork. The star company logo scene was added to imply Peter was working in this family's company.

The main solution was I would shoot the shot 5 to 7 completely and just do the editing in AE to repeat the scene. Hence I didn't need to reshoot the scene one by one. Shot 5 until shot 8 was highlighting the overworking situation as well as the repeating of lifestyle. Shot 9 revealed that Peter couldn't handle the anxiety and stress anymore, he felt totally hopeless. Shot 11 and shot 12 showed Peter's intention to commit suicide but the problem still could not solve as the issue wasn't realised at the early stage. The reborn showed in shot 13 and 14 implied the cycling of life (issue).

FEEDBACK: Mr Martin mentioned that he will support me all the way. I was told to just go ahead and try it the way I wanted. Just follow my passion will do. (It felt like he had given me up? 🤣 I guessed I'm might thinking too much haha.)

Props Preparation for Test Shoot
After confirming with the storyline, I started to create a testing model of the paper puppet. All of the props and assets were drawn on the unwanted old paper with pencil and colour pencil. The process of drawing the assets was really fun and satisfying. After the trial paper assets had been done, I started to shoot some test shot to find out the most suitable way to perform the filming to ensure that I could do it efficiently. During the test shooting, several issues had spotted on the size of the paper puppet was not in the right scale and proportion, there was some cutting error had been found as well.

Props Preparation for Actual Shoot
when it came to the props drawing for the actual shoot, watercolour was used as the main colouring media and pencil was used to depict the outer lines to emphasize the stroke and the shapes in a sketchy manner. The size of the props had been adjusted into a larger scale for shooting needs. For the actual shooting process, the consistent light source was always the biggest aspect to take care of to ensure the lighting exposure was well maintained.

Video Editing (First Stage)
After done with the shooting, I proceed to the post-production phase aiming to start the first editing stage on the raw videos. Although Mr Martin suggested student who was shooting using a smartphone could directly download the APP for stop-motion video which would automatically convert the raw videos into a stop-motion video. Using the app would seem to be a great shortcut as the student would only need to work on the audio part, but I decided to work manually in Pr and Ae as I could have more control on the shots and the sequence of video clips.

FEEDBACK:
  • Mr Razif mentioned that the sound effect was very sematic with the application of sufficient instrumental sound. While Mr Martin Mentioned that the video was a nice job.
  • Mr Razif commented: 1) the toys sound effect could be added for the baby scene with parents' hands. 2) Besides, the office crowd or ambient sound could be added as well. 3) Beating sound effect should be added to the crying scene to establish the inner emotion.
  • Mr Martin commented: 1) the shots of the repeating daily working scene should be reduced or shortened into half. 2) At the end of the working scene could change to a slow zoom into the dark scene with fatigue sound effect rather than just suddenly turned into a dark scene. 3) Froze the horror face for a longer period and slow zoom with more sound effect that led to childhood again. 4) The ending baby scene should be long slow zoom out with more sound effect.

Video Editing (Final Stage)
After the presentation session last week, revision and amendment had been done for the stop-motion video based on the feedback given by both lecturers. Below was the complete final version of the video.
