LECTURE NOTES
On the first day of our class, Mr Martin briefed the students about the module outline for this semester. Students will conduct several warm-ups exercises to accumulated knowledge, storytelling ability, aesthetic ability as well as analysis capability.
To reduce students' workload for this semester, the final project of this module will associate with the animation fundamentals module. This means that these modules "Film Studies & Cinematography" and "Animation Fundamentals" will be sharing the same final project in which students will be tasked to produce a 20 seconds animatic trailer.
Week 2 Lecture Video:
Today Mr Martin went us through some short animation videos and guided us on how to analyze the theme, story plot, art direction for the specific animation shorts. There will be several themes for one single movie, and all the themes will affect the style, character design, art direction, music as well as pace.
While the audience is watching the animation shorts, the story will be apprehended by them well. However, the audience may need to guess the plot and the theme visually. Each of the scenes is shown for some purpose. Mr Martin tells that we shall start train ourselves to watch every movie like an audience yet analyzing it as a profession.
- Narrative: tells why?
- Story: tells who & what?
- Plot: tells how?

EXERCISE
Below is the movie trailer for the Netflix animated series with 18 episodes. The animated series consists of 18 stand-alone episodes, all under 20 minutes long, and all produced by different casts and crews, though some episodes may share certain crew members. The series title refers to each episode's thematic connection to the three aforementioned subjects, though not every episode contains all three elements.
Reflection: It is fun to explore the other animation series which are totally different with any of the Disney, Pixar, Ghibli, Sony or Cartoon animation genre. Love Death & Robots animated series is full of brutal and lethal story plots. Some of them are fun as the content is full of creative sparks. However, most of them are sharping on the same string with scary and bloody themes instead of creativity.
Reflection: This kind of movie style is not often my cup of tea because of the application of gloomy and macabre visual style for animation storytelling. The creator has largely adopted the visual elements from the Gothic period which portrait a strong unique sense of art direction.
