📌 Task 4: Production & Final Outcome

 (W11 - 12)  Production Stage 1

Characters Design Illustrations By Mei Ying
During the week, our group members were required to continue with our respective tasks after yesterday’s presentation to the lecturer and Ms Irene. While Hyoung Yoon will be working on the rest of the scenery and props illustration, my next task to do was to refine the character design sketches by reducing the details. After refining the design sketches and getting some feedback from the rest of the teammates, I proceed to create character illustrations using Adobe illustrations. In order to save more time to work effectively on the animation project, we decided to make use of the illustration template available on the internet and alter the illustration to fit our desired design. At the same time, Zi Yi was helping with the plants illustrations too.

Style frame & Colour Adjustment By Mei Ying
After Hyoung Yoon and I complete all illustrations, I proceeded to create different sets of characters illustrations with colour variations as well as to do the final illustration adjustment for the rest of the assets. To ensure the video consisted of more visual depth and contrast, more tinted and toned colours were created based on the primary colour schemes. Below was the process of colour adjustment for the animation style frame. After confirming the illustrations, the files were packed and shared with other group members.

 (W13 - 14)  Production Stage 2 & Final Presentation

Moving on to this week, Hyoung Yoon and I proceeded to create a branding video. The scene I would be working on was scenes 1 and 2, meanwhile, Hyoung Yoon would be working on scenes 3, 4 and 5. Before starting the animation, we needed to arrange the Ai layers and name them properly for later use. During the discussion with Yoon, we decided to use Duik Bassel for character rigging instead of using puppet pin tools to get a richer character movement.

Scene 03 - 05 Animation By Hyoung Yoon
Below were the animation progression by Yoon. During the group discussion, we found that the animation created for scenes 03 to scene 05 was rich in movement detail. In order to match the movement details, I needed to increase the animation detail for the opening scene 01 and 02 as well. Yoon also shared the animation files with me so that I could reuse some animation elements.

Scene 01 - 02 Animation By Mei Ying
To start with the animation, I needed to rig the characters properly in Ae using Duik Bassel. The layer arranging and ringing process were not difficult but it's surely a tedious task to do as this is my first time using the Ae rigging plugin.

Final Animation Compilation By Hyoung Yoon & Mei Ying
After completing scenes 01 & 02, the working files were shared with Yoon to do the final animation edition and compilation. However, Yoon found that the animation for scenes 01 & 02 was too fast, hence he decided to readjust the timing. Furthermore, Yoon also decided to adjust the length of the mother character's arms as they looked too long. He also suggested to do adjustments to the character's facial blush he had applied in the early days. After looking at the final video output created by Yoon, I suggested to used back the first version of scenes 01 & 02 as it consists of a better character animation movement that matches with the rest of the scenes better.

Task 4 Final Presentation

 # Consultation Note:
  • Ms Lilian mentioned that she’s very happy with the final outcome as all of the design deliveries were coherent with the art direction. Moreover, Ms Lilian also mentioned that the Instagram post content was very well structured, the logo and art direction was planned, the animation video looked attractive as well as the website and the AR filter. The overall output was a great job and she was very proud of it. Ms Irene was happy with the final design outcome as well.

 # Next Course of Action:
  • Complete the blog and weekly peer assessment
  • Submit the task 4 folder
  • Send the files to Irene

 # Reflection:   After a long design journey, the brand project for DumoWongi had finally come to fruition. From data researching and ideation to the project production phases, I had gone through a lot with my teammates. There were times when we had a lot of disagreement during the critical discussion. However, I very much appreciated that my teammates were very dedicative and responsible throughout the whole collaboration. Again, the cross disciplines collaboration allowed us to learn from each other’s strengths. We got to know our own limitations and find out the solutions to overcome the problems even better. Compared with the previous project which was similar to this module, I found that we had improved a lot in terms of their critical analysis, design thinking as well as design aesthetics. I was literally happy that I got the chance to learn from my teammates, especially the motion graphics animation. Last but not least, thank you to our collaborative entrepreneur Ms Irene for being highly understanding and supportive of our work. It was such a great pleasure to work with DumoWongi and I hope our design deliveries could provide better brand visuals that help Ms Irene to grow her business.
