πŸ“ŒProject 2: Character Lipsync & Acting

(Week 7) 12/05/21

This week, students are tasked to create a lip-sync & acting animation with the character they have designed based on the story accordingly. During the lecture class, Ms Jen brief us about the requirement for the project submission as well as the things to take note of while dealing with lip-sync animation.

Below was the audio files shared by the lecturer on google drive, students needed to choose either one of them to work on the character lipsync and acting project. After going through the audio file, I decided to work on the Finding Nemo audio as I thought this voice match my character personality better.

(Week 9) 28/05/21

After choosing the Finding Nemo audio file, (fig 2.1) I sketch out the draft key-poses using the pencil tool in Adobe Animate. There are only four key-poses in total for the lip-sync drawing at the beginning. After confirming the key-poses, I then only add in the inbetweening sketch to create a smooth lip-sync movement. Moving on to the acting part, (fig 2.2) I found it was quite challenging to create an acting animation. Below are some working processes in Adobe Animate and the acting key-poses in GIF format.

Feedback: Ms Jen mentioned that the lip-sync draft sketch was just fine. However, the lecturer was recommending to record my actions as a visual reference for the character acting. The acting should be in consideration of the character's personality and characteristics.

(Week 10) 04/06/21

(fig 3.1) After finalising the movement of the lip-sync & acting according to the feedback given by the lecturer, I proceed to create the vector drawing based on the draft sketch. I realised that I was having a problem doing a proper asset grouping by converting a group of assets into a working symbol. The working process was quite tedious when I had to repeat the process of clicking into multiple symbols layers to do a tiny motion adjustment.

Feedback: Ms Jen mentioned that the animation and poses are ok. The thing to take note of is to add some more in between drawing for the arm movement and also the eyebrow to ensure the movement is smooth. Other than that, the hair and frontier bang movement is good.

(Week 11) 11/06/21

With the character lip-sync & acting animation done, I continued to create a background drawing in Photoshop. (fig 4.1 & 4.2) Below are the screenshots showing the process of doing colour blocking and illustration. The complete background drawing was imported into Animate cc to do the final adjustment. Lastly, (fig 4.5) I had created a character expression sheet that displaying the main facial expression of the character.
