πŸ“ŒProject 2: Channel Bumper (Video Intro)

 Pre-Production  (W5 - W6)

Research & Idea Brainstorming
In this week, students were tasked to produce pre-production tasks for their project 1. Students would synthesise the knowledge gained in project 1 for application in project 2. Besides, students were to demonstrate the ability to explore and generate an abstract channel bumper in any creative approach with consideration of good audio tempo and visually compelling video.

Requirements for Pre-Production Stage:
  • Idea Sketches (3 Pages)
  • Moodboard (x 2 / 1080x1920)
  • Storyboard (1 Page)

Design Proposal: Idea Sketch + Moodboard + Storyboard

 # Consultation Note:
  • General: Freedom is given to the students to create something that they are passionate about. Hence, students should make use of this chance to create something presentable for their portfolio. The difference between creating a video for personal and for a brand was people won't overly judge on the video that you create for your own, and people will be judging on the video that you create for another brand other than yourself as they will compare with the market.

  • Specific: Be aware of putting time or date on the video as it will be expired! As people will tend to ignore things that have already expired. (Only include the time or date when you are confirming working with the business) For example, Some soundtracks will have a timeline to show the music playing duration and release date will be included if it's a seasonal release.

  • It's good that you are already aware to create something that is not existing in the market so that people won't judge you too much by comparing the existing product for the same brand. It will also trigger a cooperation chance to work with the company if they like your creation. Otherwise, the final outcome will be adding more value to your portfolio as well. Lastly, make use of the existing visual element you have and play with the composition (recomposing).

 # Reflection:   I was kinda freaked out when I found that project 2 and project 3 were actually connected as I did not intend to use back the same video content for project 3. However, I found there was another possibility to develop project 3 from project 2 by accident, which was to create a lyrics video with a blend of motion graphic concepts.

 Production & Post Production  (W6 - W8)

Production Stage:
Based on the feedback from the lecturer, students should straightaway proceed to create and test the animation in After Effect without creating the animatics due to time constraints. To begin with, I created the composition in After Effect based on the storyboard created last week. I started to play around with the text effect and also search for several youtube tutorials videos to get the text transition effect right. Below were some of the working processes of visual element creation and composition.

 # Consultation Note:
  • General: Students should make use of the existing resources/materials instead of creating everything from scratch. Students could apply texture in the video to enhance the visual, but make sure the compositing was the main thing in the whole video. Always follow the sound/music as it defined the speed and tempo of the whole video compositing. Try to visualise the sound! Try to explore your own style and maintain it to establish your own video style/identity as well.

  • Specific: The final outcome of the video should be similar to what you have proposed in the mood board/proposal. Ensure the colour scheme, font and visual style was related to the proposal. Try not to create learn how to imitate the reference video style for this project before you are capable enough to come out with your own thing.
 # Reflection:   Although the lecturer did mention that we should make use of the existing materials to recompose ta video bumper. However, I found that the existing materials I had created in the past were not sufficient to establish the ideal concept for video bumper... Therefore I had to create most of the video composting materials mostly from scratch. Considering the limited time for this project, I needed to work faster by recycling the materials I had created in an effective way.

To avoid shape distortion issues (chose square pixels in composition settings)

To centre the anchor point (Window > Transform > Center Anchor / Ctrl + Alt + Home)

Creating visual materials in Adobe Illustration

1st scene part 1:  A set of alphabets sliding in vertically like a slotting machine

1st scene part 2:  two sets of text sliding in horizontally with flickering shapes & dots

2nd scene:  Singer's face feature shot with moving text and shapes

3rd scene:  3 lines of texts moving in and out in the different direction

4th scene:  The climax shot that featuring the singer's full body image

Post Production Stage:
In the early days of week 8, I continued to do the final visual adjustment in After Effect and import the video clip into Premiere Pro to do the final video editing.

 # Consultation Note:
  • Anything you want to improve? : "I want to improve the transition effect especially for the typographic transition could be more complex. However, I  just create something that is simple within a limited time with a presentable visual. There is still a huge room for the visual element compositing and colour transition design as well."

  • Specific: "You need to pay more attention to the typographic details which normally many students will have that issue on the typography kerning and tracking. Ensure the space between the letter L and A is equal with the rest of the word. On the other hand, you need to do the colour correction for the last scene as the singer poster with black background colour seems to not match the blue background colour.
 # Reflection:   I found myself not really getting used to creating the video composition after effect and exporting the composition video one by one then importing all video compositions into Premiere Pro to do the scene arrangement as well as sound editing. I was more comfortable completing the whole composition in AE according to the imported audio to get the composition right. I would then only move to Pr to add audio and colour adjustment for the final video editing... I think I may need more time to practice the working style introduced by the lecturer.
